I am heavily involved in cars, both as a hobby
and a vocation since 1959. I was working at a shop when John Kuck and his
dad brought in their Daytona for some work. They did most of the work
themselves, but some of it was done where I worked. I was about 15 or so at
that time, and John was a year or two younger. We got to know each other.
They were both nice guys. His dad owned a furniture store in town, and was
kind of into cars. They owned a 57 Studebaker Golden Hawk that they bought
new, but it became terminally ill with rust. The engine and trans (stick)
was the obvious engine for the Daytona. Our shop was a body shop primarily,
but they had a mechanic who now I realise was kind of a butcher, do the work
John and his dad couldn't do. The engine suffered greatly at the hands of
this guy, and was replaced with the 406 about 66 or 67 or sometime around
then. I kept working on cars the rest of my life, and John I think went into
the service and on to school. I often thought of the guys I knew in school,
like John in particular, but have not seen any of them all these years. I
knew the car immediately when I saw it on the website, and had to follow up.
I intend to follow up on the books also, I have a library on odd cars, and
love underdog type stuff. I wish I could be of some service to you guys, but
other than being a fan, I'm afraid I can't be of any help.
